Every birthday became a chance to plant something new.
When Nan died, everyone wanted to buy flowers.
Her daughter suggested something different.
“Let’s plant them instead.”
Each birthday, every grandchild chooses one new plant.
Before it goes into the ground, they each tell one story about Nan.
Some stories are tiny.
Some make everyone laugh.
The garden is now nearly ten years old.
Children who once needed help digging holes now arrive with their own children.
No one remembers exactly which rose belonged to which year anymore.
That somehow feels right.
The garden isn’t becoming older.
It’s becoming a family history.
